Exhibition at Strand Gallery (Proud Central)

I'm delighted to announce that my work is to feature in an exhibition of the London Independent Photography group at the Strand Gallery (Proud Central) here in London between 20th and 30th October 2010, just a week away.

32 John Adam Street, London WC2N 6BP. Monday - Saturday 11am - 7pm. Free.

Three photographs will hang, including this one above of Connor sucking on a lollipop near the multiplex cinema in Peckham, south London. (He doesn't even like lollipops much and I don't think he finished this one.)

I'm hoping to use this opportunity to secure a solo show either at this same gallery or similar.

If you're in London over this period then I hope you'll come see it.

Many thanks.

ARROW 360 - The Go-Cart Project

Over the summer my sons and I built this go-cart. Most of the materials used were found while walking home from school over a period of many weeks.

It was an opportunity for me to teach them about preparing materials, using tools, realizing a concept and a practical application of simple mathematics.

It was also a golden opportunity for us to make a cool little movie. Of course, we just had to reference the BBC title sequence for their Formula One Motor Racing coverage. And I hope Fleetwood Mac won't mind my including a segment of The Chain because nothing comes close for this subject matter.

Cameras: Olympus E-PL1 (with Nikkor prime lenses) and Nikon D200.

Software: Photoshop, Nikon View, GarageBand and iMovie 09.

Hardware: Apple MacBook.

Mourning a Dead Fox

Recently Connor and I came across a dead fox at the end of our road. We see lots of foxes around here. Several a week, in fact. It's very exciting. They are such beautiful creatures. Whether you think of them as pests or not, they are still very beautiful.

This one was not hit by a car so may have died of illness or old age. It's coat had been in lovely condition.

Connor needed to linger for quite some time. He was very quiet for a while then started asking lots of questions such as whether or not this particular fox would ever live again.

I wouldn't say he was upset, necessarily, rather he was a little sad but mostly curious and thoughtful. It was an interesting experience.

I don't think I'll ever forget this brief encounter we had with the unfortunate creature. Connor might but I won't.

Parkour Documentary Film Project

I have so much material to post here that I'll need to set aside a day just to organize it. I hope I can do that this coming weekend. I have a virtual tour of our house and the space around it to show. I have a play fighting video of the two lads which is a hoot. I have loads and loads of recent photographs to upload as well. Claire too has some images on her Blackberry that I'd like to post here. And of course there's all the art work that the two lads have been churning out recently. Some of it is rather good. Connor in particular is making rapid artistic progress with his bold style.

Anyway, today's post is a blatant attempt at promoting my documentary film project. I need some equipment to get this project off the ground. I can get started with just GB£600 and I'm on my way to reaching that goal. I have set the fundraising to $2000 to help towards the software and external hard disk costs and to pay an editor to make final checks before release.

I have two distributors already in place for this project. I'm currently preparing a proposal for submission to a major software manufacturer that licensed my work previously as they have expressed interest in my projects. However, such a potential deal might involve surrendering some directorial control which would not be ideal. So if I can secure some initial funding through crowd sourcing then I'm all clear to make the film exactly as I want it.

There are several levels of support available. Even just a single dollar would be hugely appreciated. Any contribution above $5 gets the full hi-res download of the finished film to play in your device of choice along with hi-res, personal use downloads of your favorite photographs from the project. Click the widget below for full project details.

If you have any friends or colleagues who might be interested in investing is such a project as this, then please share.

Many thanks.

SWINGING SUPERHERO CONNOR

I made this shot yesterday. It's Connor. Thought I'd share it.

I hope to scan in some of the lads' recent drawings in the next couple of weeks as soon as I get past a couple of grant deadlines. Before that I'll likely post some more photos. Some from Ireland last summer and some from this Easter break.

SCREENING at HOST GALLERY

My FLYING SPACE HOPPERS film was screened at HOST GALLERY in London recently. It was part of the gallery's first CAROUSEL: SLIDE SLAM series.

I was delighted to have been asked by Jon Levy to screen the two minute, stop-motion animation short.

There was a good crowd there and they appeared to thoroughly enjoy seeing the film on a big screen. I certainly did. It was great to enjoy it with a large group of people. There was much giggling throughout. Eoin, Connor and I did a lot of giggling while making the film.

Here it is again. It's in high definition so you can expand it to full screen.

Still Here.

I've been neglecting this blog recently but life in this household has been rather hectic of late.
I'll resume posting with these four images made during 2009. Two in Ireland and two right here in our neighbourhood.

First up: Claire and the lads walking in a foggy Crystal Palace Park in winter.

Next is a strange image from another nearby park of Claire (partially hidden by the shadow) and the lads during a snack break.

Next we're off to a maze at Bunratty Castle in County Clare in Ireland where Connor is struggling to find a way out.

And lastly we're descending the motte at St. Mullin's in County Carlow.

Lots more to come. Next weekend we have Eoin's birthday party and there'll likely be much to post from that.

Tomorrow I'll post his invitation which he and I worked on together.

Back soon.
Paul.

Portraits of Connor

Some portraits of Connor.

Here he is sucking on a lollipop having just been to see The Fantastic Mr. Fox at Peckham Multiplex with his brother and me. Funny thing is, neither he nor Eoin like lollipops much and so these were quickly discarded. They did insist on my buying them, however. I had offered them juicy apples and other such goodies, which they'd have devoured, but they wanted the sickly sweet lollipops which I knew they wouldn't really like.

Here he is having had his face painted, at the London aquarium I think. We made this picture as he was about to have it removed in the bath and he wanted to record it.

And finally for this posting, is a photo of him getting a hug from his best friend at school, Daniel.

Collaboration with Corel Corporation

Well, it had been in the making for many weeks and finally went live on Wednesday, 27th January 2010. Towards the end of last year I was contacted by a senior bod at Corel Corporation, fellow photographer and filmmaker, Tobie Openshaw. He was interested in the Flying Space Hoppers short film I made. He wanted to investigate the possibility of using the component images to design a tutorial on stop-motion animation for Corel customers. After conversing via Facebook and email we did a deal.

This is what they came up with at Corel;

Here is my updated original;

This is the full transcript of the tutorial they prepared. The link opens a new page.

I'd be interested to read your opinions of the project. Should you be interested in doing something similar, do read the tutorial and perhaps consider getting the software. I will install Windows on my Mac and give the software a try myself. You get enormous professional level capability for the price.

Thanks for visiting. Please return.

Spiderman and Blizzard

Connor on Christmas day in Warwick having just received a Spiderman costume. I love this picture. Such a Connor pose.
And Claire's smile is gorgeous.

Eoin and Connor making tracks through the snow on our new street in Sydenham.

I have so much to post here. Claire shot a short interview piece with Eoin that needs to be edited and I have loads of new pictures to work through.

New post also at my work blog at Photohumourist.com, should anyone be interested.
There's also my neighborhood blog at SydenhamShots.co.uk

Back soon. Hoping everyone had a happy holiday.

Happy new year.
Paul.
